Growing Trees is Exciting

Seth’s blog is a peek into the nursery and he talks about what is to come and some care tips.

Growing trees is not boring! Even though they can take years to grow, I never get bored with my crops on the nursery. The truth is that the more time I spend with the trees the more wild and crazy ideas I come up with. Some of my best ideas come to me when I am alone, out in the fields doing some special hand pruning that is required for more complicated pruning tasks.

A couple years ago I got the idea to turn a Bloodgood Japanese Maple into some form of topiary. While working in the crop I could see this Oriental Pompon form in a tree I was working on, and the next thing you know, I had created this first ever uniquely grown Japanese Maple. I am still considering whether or not Bower & Branch will grow more of these and make them available to you. I know this, everyone who sees these trees loves the idea!

Or how about this one… I love Redbuds and my favorite three are the Traditional Redbud with green foliage, Forest Pansy with dark purple foliage and the new Floating Clouds with green and white variegated foliage. All three I like for the foliage and began to wonder: “What if I could grow these in a clump form all together?” This year I did exactly that and we created the Bower & Branch Redbud Bouquet. I only grew a handful of these and we will be featuring these only through next summer. Let me know what you think!

My latest idea is called Trunk Twist. I am growing Wisteria, Redbud, Weeping Birch, Snow Fountain Cherry, and Weeping Pussy Willow… all with this new Trunk Twist idea. Instead of the simple and expected regular straight trunk, I twist and turn the main trunk into a corkscrew-like habit when these trees are young. For the lifetime of these items, the trunk itself will be an added feature. Trunk Twist trees will be available beginning in 2015 through

I am not sure what crazy tree idea will come next, but I can tell you now that I have some other ideas already in place on the nursery that will surprise you and my boss!
