Horstmann's Silberlocke Korean Fir is a choice specimen evergreen tree that looks like a "flocked" Christmas tree. This rare conifer is known for its soft, curly, two-tone needles that are dark green on one side and frosty white on the other. Silberlocke Korean Fir will be the star of your entryway garden, patio area, or front-yard island bed, and will draw oohs and ahhs from visitors. Near rock walls, boulders, or stonework of any kind it will look most natural, bringing the feel of the mountains to your home. You can also include it in a collection of dwarf conifers, which is a lovely way to showcase a variety of foliage colors and textures in your landscape all year long.

The Story

Korean Fir is a mountain species that hangs out at around 3,000 to 6,000 feet elevation in South Korea.  It is adapted to moderate temperatures, but snow is no stranger to it.  The late German nurseryman Gunter Horstmann named this selection ‘Silberlocke’ because of the way the needles curl around the branches, exposing the silvery-white undersides.  Silber means “Silver” in German, and locke refers to a “lock” of hair.  We think it looks like Frosted Mini-Wheats.  The cones are cool, too, and turn from a pinkish-purple color to a dark denim-blue.

The Details

Discovered by Gunter Horstmann of Germany, this specimen pyramidal evergreen has curved deep green needles with bright silver undersides. Large steely blue cones emerge in spring later changing to purple. Staying relatively small, Horstmann's Silberlocke makes an excellent addition to any conifer garden.

How to Grow

Once you see this plant, YOU ARE GOING TO WANT ONE.  However, you’ll want to scan this checklist before you get out your wallet:  Do you have mild summers?  Do you have moist but well-drained soil? Is it slightly acidic? Do you have a sunny site?  Are you away from the pollution of the city?  This isn’t an easy plant to grow if all of those conditions aren’t met.  The most important on the list is well-drained soil.  The second is moderate summers.  If your site passed the test, congratulations!
