The Story

Native to China and the Himalayas, the forerunner to this selection was delivered to Westerners through Frank Meyer, who worked for the USDA in the early 1900s collecting plants in Asia. He also collected for the Arnold Arboretum (the Arnold has posted Meyer’s letters from that period online, and his adventures make for fascinating reading).  The form he sent back, ‘Meyeri,’ was a cultivated variety he’d found for sale in China, not the wild species.  It sprouted a mutant dwarf branch in 1950 at a Dutch nursery.  ‘Blue Star’ was born.

The Details

To put it plainly - it's a Blue Star Juniper on a stick. The same beautiful silvery-blue foliage only this time it looks like a lollipop. With the eye-catching color and unique form this is one shrub that's guaranteed to add some visual interest to any garden!

How to Grow

Though Blue Star Juniper has only known nursery life throughout its history, it hankers for the cool mountain air of its ancestral homeland. This plant will look the perkiest and live the longest in cool-summer regions like New England, but it’s so gosh-darn cute that Midwesterners and Southerners like to plant it anyway.  Wherever it’s planted, it needs good drainage and full sun.  A slow grower, it will never get out of bounds.  If any bagworm cases should appear, simply pick them off and crush them under your heel—problem solved.
