Audubon® Tall Coreopsis

Coreopsis tripteris

This plant is not available at this time through Bower & Branch. Bower & Branch provides this information for reference only. Please click here to be placed on a waiting list. See below for other selections.

Heads and shoulders above the rest! Tall Coreopsis is a statuesque wildflower that will have a commanding presence in your garden. Throughout spring and early summer, this splendid native steadily grows up, up, up, building a framework of smooth, slim stems and clean green foliage. Beginning in midsummer, the seven-foot stems are topped by perky yellow Daisy flowers with mahogany-brown centers, much loved by pollinators. In fall, the sunny flowers become seedheads, and finches arrive to get their fill. While you sit on your deck, you’ll watch the birds cling to the gently swaying stems and dig in.

May Benefit & Attract: cardinals & grosbeaks, wrens, sparrows, thrushes, orioles, finches, mockingbirds & thrashers, vireos

The Story

“Coreopsis” gets its name from the Greek words for “looks like a bug.” This is a reference to the seeds of a related genus, Bidens, which used to be classified as a Coreopsis. Bidens seeds have two little prongs that enable them to attach to animal fur like a tick. Bidens is also known as “Beggars Ticks” and Coreopsis as “Tickseed.” Tall Tickseed distinguishes itself from other Tickseeds by its height and by the chocolate-brown centers of its flowers. It grows throughout much of the eastern U.S. and is native from Iowa to Pennsylvania and south to Texas and Florida.

The Details

Tall Coreopsis is a bonanza for native bees. Bumblebees, digger bees, dagger bees, sweat bees, leaf-cutter bees, and cuckoo bees all visit its flowers for the nectar and pollen rewards they offer. Our underappreciated beneficial wasps, flies, and beetles also feed on them.

How to Grow

Give Tall Coreopsis a position in full sun for best results. This plant is not fussy about soil and will tolerate a range of conditions, from sandy to clayey and from moist to fairly dry. Tall Coreopsis is generally self-supporting and should not need staking unless it is grown in a particularly windy area or in soil that is too rich or too wet. The only maintenance needed will be to cut down the stems in early spring to make way for new growth. Plants may reseed on their own, so choose an area where they can spread and naturalize.
