This Tree is not available for Sale at this time through Bower & Branch. Bower & Branch provides this information for reference only. Please check back with us or contact us for more detail.

Red Sunset® Maple is a four-season shade tree.  You will find this popular selection of our native Red Maple is not only great for picnicking under or tying the hammock to in summer, but you’ll appreciate the joy it brings to your garden throughout the year.  In fall, Red Sunset’s® leaves turn as red as a dead-ripe beefsteak tomato.  In late winter, look for the canopy to erupt once more—this time in a hazy of tiny flame-red flowers to kick off the start of spring.  We are pleased to offer this best-selling Red Maple tree for sale not only in its usual street-tree form, but also as a multiple-trunked specimen.  It’s your choice!

The Story

J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring, Oregon has introduced dozens of unique new trees (82 and counting, in fact) over the years.  Their most famous selection of all, however, remains Red Sunset® Maple, which debuted in 1966.  It was chosen for its glowing scarlet-red fall color and symmetrical, well-branched habit.  Few newer selections have proven to be an improvement over this classic.  Our “Clump-Form” Red Sunsets® offer a different take on the usual form.  Three or more trunks rise from the ground, in the manner that some Birches are grown.

The Details

This is one sunset that will never fade away! Red Sunset Maple is one of the best selections of the native Red Maple around and an excellent choice for street trees or as a specimen in your yard. In spring, new foliage is tinged with red eventually turning green with silver undersides. Those bright green leaves turn to bright red in fall supplying you with the most memorable sunset of all!

How to Grow

Red Maples are one of those trees that you plant and don’t worry about afterwards. In other words – it’s easy to grow! These fast-growing Maples like soaking up sunshine so be sure to plant it in sunny location. Red Maples also do fairly well in most soil conditions as long as the soil has good drainage. Once established, your tree will be more tolerant of wet soil conditions. For the first 3 or 4 years that your Red Maple graces your garden, give it a low rate fertilizer about once a year in the fall to help it produce healthy new growth for the following spring season. Red Maples don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning. Red Maples don’t have any major pest or disease problems, which is wonderful. One slight inconvenience you might encounter is their surface roots. These surface roots make it difficult for anything to grow underneath them – grass or plants (a great spot for a sitting area if you ask me). If you can overcome this minor detail, you got yourself a beautiful shade tree with gorgeous red fall color!
