Weeping Candied Apple™ Crabapple has a lot to give, but asks for little in return. In spring, you’ll love its profusion of fragrant rosy blossoms which fade to a soft pink. Pollinators of all stripes will delight in them, too, buzzing contentedly as they zip from flower to flower. In fall, this showy ornamental tree is decked out in hordes of tiny, glossy red “candied apples” that will feed hungry birds in winter. So much to offer, but so little required of you! This tough tree doesn’t need babying and won’t be a burden on your already busy schedule.

Candied Apple™ is a product of Lake County Nursery of Perry, Ohio. LCN is owned by the Zampini family, and the presence of ‘zam’ in the botanical name (here, ‘Weepingcanzam’) is a giveaway that the plant is a Lake County introduction—and there are lots of them. Crabapples are one of their specialties; LCN has introduced 28 to date. In Crabs, they look for “superiority in disease resistance, foliage, flower, and form, in that order.” This one was hybridized by Jim Zampini and was granted a patent in 1977.
This small weeping Crabapple is sweet! Fragrant reddish-pink flowers covers the cascading branches in spring followed by bright red crabapples in fall - a delicacy for visiting birds. A good sized tree for any garden, big or small. Use for a specimen outside your picture window so you can see it all year round!
How to Grow
No special knowledge needed to grow this charming multi-season tree. Candied Apple™ is forgiving of a variety of soil types, and only requests lots of sunshine, regular water during establishment, and good drainage. In a wet year, it may be affected by a disease called “apple scab,” which leaves dark spots on the fruits and foliage. This can be prevented with fungicides or simply ignored. Candied Apple™ is resistant to the more serious diseases that sometimes strike Crabapples and makes a refreshing alternative to the Weeping Cherries that some say are overplanted.
