      Why plant Viking Chokeberry?

Strong tasting like the fearless Vikings, Viking Chokeberry brings a tart, tasty flavor that some may find too strong for their taste buds. Those who are adventurous to try Chokeberries will discover that they are great for making jellies and jams so break out those mason jars! Highly nutritious, Viking is excellent for turning into juice and being added into pies. If Viking isn't appealing to your palate, the local wildlife and birds will surely visit to snack on the juicy, blackberries giving you a show in your own backyard!

Developed in Europe, Viking was designed to be an orchard plant. Black Chokeberry is a superfood! That’s right—the bitter berry with the unappetizing name is gaining ground as a health food. And with good reason! The berries are higher in antioxidants than any other cold-hardy fruit (five times higher than blueberries), and they have cancer-fighting properties. A few companies have started turning chokeberries into juice; they blend it with apple or grape juice to make it palatable. You’ll find it marketed under its botanical name, Aronia. You can also buy frozen Aronia berries for muffins or bars or, better yet, grow your own!

How to use Viking Chokeberry in the landscape?

Enjoy Viking early in the spring with its bright white fragrant flower clusters that bloom earlier than Black Chokeberry species. The berries ripen in late summer in time for making jelly, pies, and even juice! Chokeberry has been suggested as an alternative to the ubiquitous Burning Bush with its blazing red fall color.

      Planting Zones

      Hardiness Zone: 3-8

      How To Plant Viking Chokeberry

Plant Viking in an area with full sun but part shade is okay too; the best fruit harvests will come from being exposed to full sun. Soil requirements are very lax, seeing as Viking can grow in average-medium moisture soil well-draining to growing in boggy conditions.

      How To Water

Chokeberry will appreciate watering deeply, and regularly during its first few years in the ground. Irrigate weekly, and especially during long dry spells or extreme heat after it’s established.

      How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

      How To Prune

You will want to be sure to remove any suckers that start to grow to prevent the spread of Viking unless spreading is desired.

      How Does Shipping Work?

Size Small, Medium, and Large plants (our Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a common carrier. Ships in a plant-safe designed box within 7-12 business days.
