Chestnuts - get your Chestnuts! We're looking at you, Northerners. The Precoce Migoule Chestnut is THE Chestnut for you! This vigorous French Hybrid Chestnut is ideal for northern climates as it is an 'early-season' fruiting tree. These Chestnuts ripen from mid-September to early October, avoiding those notoriously damaging early frosts. The Precoce Migoule Chestnut flavor is often described as very good to excellent, and they are considered 'large' (24-26 per pound) - leading to quite the harvest when mature! When ripe, they drop free of the burr - easy peasy! But don't hesitate to scoop these nuts up as you won't be the only one foraging for Chestnuts - the deer and other wildlife may beat you to it!

Our chestnuts are not GMO, Genetically Modified Organisms, which are created in a laboratory.

The Story

In the early days of the United States, millions of American Chestnut Trees grew across the land, from Michigan to Maine and south to Mississippi and northwestern Florida. The largest specimens were over 100 feet tall and had trunks 12 feet thick. The durable wood supplied people with the material to make furniture, railway ties, and utility poles. Then, in 1904, a deadly Chestnut blight from China appeared at the Bronx Zoo. By the time Nat King Cole was singing about roasting chestnuts in 1946, most of the country’s Chestnut Trees had fallen victim. We offer seedlings from mature, surviving Chestnut Trees in northwestern Illinois in an effort to help get this glorious species reestablished!

The Details

Northern growers, here is a chestnut that will produce before the frost kills off the crop! Precoce Migoule is an early producing chestnut that produces yearly crops abundant in quality nuts. A vigorous grower, Precoce can double as an excellent shade tree during the hotter weeks when the sun shines bright. This is an ideal tree to plant near Colossal due to Precoce being a reliable pollinizer.

How to Grow

Precoce Migoule Chestnut appreciates good, rich, moist, well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine. Provide regular irrigation. Chestnuts are encased in prickly, sea urchin–like pods, so you’ll want to keep this tree away from patios, pools, sidewalks, and other places where bare feet may wander. In rural areas, semi-wild spaces are ideal, as local wildlife like turkeys, jays, and grouse will love to share in the bounty. Before planting, check with your local extension office about the presence of Chestnut blight in your area and the feasibility of planting Chestnuts on your property.
