Ogon Dawn Redwood

Dawn Redwood is an amazing specimen tree with an incredible story. Having existed for 100 million years in the fossil record, it was believed to be extinct, but was discovered alive and well in the 1940s! Ogon (a.k.a. 'Gold Rush') Dawn Redwood is even more special, as this version boasts flamboyant yellow foliage. In fall, the soft, feathery leaves will turn coppery orange and drop, allowing you to better see the reddish brown bark, which is gnarled like ancient driftwood. Plant this fantastic large-growing legacy tree in a prime viewing spot, and it will delight you every day as well as enchant generations to come with its own special beauty, charisma, and story.

The Story
There are many plants in commerce known as ‘Ogon’—ogon being Japanese for “gold.” This Ogon was brought to us from Japan by the amazing plantsman and modern-day plant explorer Barry Yinger. Fascinated with plants, especially those from the other side of the globe, Yinger majored in horticulture at the University of Maryland, but wanting to read about Asian plants in the original languages, he learned Chinese and Japanese as well! He has made many plant-collecting trips to Asia, bringing back rare finds—and learning Korean and Thai along the way.
The Details
Oh golly gee… it's Ogon for me! A Dawn Redwood with soft golden foliage that holds color well throughout the summer. Ogon is a deciduous conifer with fine textured foliage and peeling bark giving you multi-seasonal interest. Pyramidal in shape and you might want to give it some space - it gets pretty big!
How to Grow
Ogon Dawn Redwood (you may also see it listed as ‘Gold Rush’) is an easy tree to grow. It is adaptable to different soils and climates; the only thing it won’t stand for is drought. With regular irrigation, Ogon grows at a steady clip—not as fast as the green form, but considerably faster than most other choice specimen trees. No need to rake in fall—the feathery leaves can be left in place as mulch. You can put away your pruning shears, too. This tree naturally assumes a perfect pyramid.
