The Story

Cherished for centuries in Japan, China, and Korea, where they are native, Japanese Maples have come a long way from the unadulterated, simple, green understory plants they once were. Hundreds of years of selective breeding, random mutations, and propagation have given us a wealth of novel varieties in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and color patterns. Jeddeloh (pronounced YED-uh-low) is a fairly new introduction that originated in a German nursery of the same name. Jeddeloh Nursery is a well-respected grower that has been in business for over 80 years.

The Details

Jeddeloh Orange is a smaller-growing Japanese Maple that is amenable to growing in pots. Plant it in a large container on your patio, and you won’t miss a minute of its fascinating color changes through the year.

How to Grow

Jeddeloh Orange Japanese Maple is happiest in moderate climates where winters are neither too frigid, nor summers too hot and steamy. In the warmer parts of its range, it appreciates some shade from the afternoon sun, though it can be grown in full sun where summers are mild. Wind protection is advisable in sites exposed to freezing winter winds. Jeddeloh Orange isn’t fussy about soil, as long as it isn’t wet. Like most Maple Trees, it does occasionally fall prey to verticillium wilt, a fungal disease present in some soils. The disease is more likely to attack stressed trees, and proper cultural care is the best means of defense against it.
