After 10 years, Green Arrow Weeping Alaskan Cedar grows to be about 18 feet tall and 2 feet wide. No, that’s not a typo! This crazy, quirky tree really does shoot skyward like an arrow to make an incredibly fun focal point in your garden. The trunk climbs up, up, up, creating a super-skinny framework for the handsome, deep blue–green foliage, which hangs straight down. Holding its rich color throughout the year, this cool conifer looks sharp at all times. Use it as a single specimen in a tight space, or for a wild effect, plant a grove of Green Arrows. Wacky and wonderful!

The Story

The story of Green Arrow Weeping Alaskan Cedar is a bit scandalous. Canadian nurseryman Gordon Bentham found the tree on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The problem was that it was growing in a national forest, and the Canadian government denied Bentham’s request to take a few cuttings. Bentham considered the denial unreasonable and took the cuttings anyway. However, he passed away soon afterwards, and the plants languished in a neglected nursery, destined to be lost forever. Luckily, Bentham had told Oregon Nurseryman Talon Buckholz about the intriguing tree he’d propagated, and Buckholz was able to buy the little trees and bring them to the U.S. He introduced Green Arrow in 1984.

The Details

Green Arrow Weeping Alaskan Cedar may occasionally sprout a longer branch off the main trunk. Many feel this habit adds character to the tree, accentuating its ultra-slim outline. If you’d rather keep your tree on the straight and narrow, you can easily prune off any errant branches.

How to Grow

Green Arrow Weeping Alaskan Cedar likes lots of sunshine, though in areas where summer highs are often in the 90s, it appreciates some afternoon shade. Growth is best when given regular water, but not so much that the ground remains soggy for hours. It isn’t too picky about soil and will even grow in clay as long as drainage is decent. For a northwestern native, it is quite adaptable, but it does prefer mild climates. Insect pests and diseases rarely trouble this tree, although deer may browse the foliage. Treat with Plantskydd® Pest Deterrent if deer pose a threat in your area.
