The Story

It’s hard to believe this plant is the same species as the huge Norway Spruces that inhabit so many yards, but sure enough, it is.  Sometimes conifers get a weird, dwarfed bit of growth on one of their branches, called a “witch’s broom.”  That mutant part can be grafted onto a normal plant, and Voilà! A new dwarf variety.  Little Gem is even more dwarf than most—a dwarf of a dwarf!  It was a witch’s broom found on the witch’s broom ‘Nidiformis,’ or Birdsnest Spruce, in Holland around 1958.

The Details

Such a cute little evergreen - grafted onto a standard to make it just that much more special. Almost like a green lollipop, Little Gem Spruce standards are rather easy to grow and need little maintenance. Perfect for planting near a front door, add to your topiary collection, or plant it in any spot around the house to draw some attention.

How to Grow

The name says it all with this Globe Form Dwarf Spruce, a gem in any landscape. Relatively simple to grow and easy to maintain. Just once a year, if at all, light pruning is required and only to maintain a strict globe form. Best prune time is immediately after new Spring growth.

A very hardy dwarf Tree can be planted in all areas that provide ample sunlight through the day. Little Gem can withstand being planted in gardens and landscapes that are facing north.

On the nursery we do watch for overwatering, so we allow this Dwarf Spruce to dry down between waterings and then we water thoroughly. Little Gem does not like very wet soil and the key to great Trees is having great roots.

Little Gem will benefit from annual Spring and Fall fertilizer applications. Use Bower & Branch Ongoing Tree Care Element for both applications and follow our instructions on the label. This will help with great roots which will lead to great color and hardiness.
