The Story
Blue Spruce, or Colorado Blue Spruce, as they like to call it West of the Mississippi, is a Rocky Mountain native that has found a home in all climates cool enough for its growth (it struggles in the Deep South). Wild plants usually have needles of a misty sea-green color, but select trees are distinctly powder blue. The brightest, bluest ones are called “shiners” in the nursery business, and these are what we offer at Bower & Branch™.
The Details
One of the best ways to add some blue to your garden! This adaptable Blue Spruce maintains an overall conical shape and can be used as a specimen, in screens, or in groupings. Branches and needles are stiff and rigid, but don't let the prickliness fool you - this Spruce would simply LOVE to be with you!
How to Grow
You wouldn’t think a drama queen like this one would be so easy to please, but it is in fact quite easygoing. Blue Spruce thrives in sunshine and freely draining soil. It is not a fast growing tree, but given these two things, it will increase in size and grandeur every year. Once established, too little water is better than too much—that low spot in the yard is not the place for it. And don’t plant it right next to the house! Though it looks cute and compact now, it may get over 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide.
