London Planetree, a.k.a. “Plane Tree,” is a large hybrid shade tree for spacious properties.  You might know its “father” better, the American Sycamore (which also has an alias—“Buttonwood”).  This rare, slightly smaller, variegated Planetree will delight you in spring when its fuzzy leaves emerge splattered with white pigment like a painter’s radio.  The foliage turns green in hot weather, but this tree’s biggest asset is showy year-round:  its chalk-white bark, which reveals itself at a young age.  Backed by evergreens or the dark brick or siding of your home, this tree’s snazzy white bark will really pop.  Not realizing there are other kinds of white-barked trees, your neighbors might even compliment you on your new Birch tree!

The Story

This hybrid cross has a long history in European cities.  When you’re nibbling your croissant on the Champs Élysées, this is the tree you’ll see lining the street.  It has also been planted in London since 1663, earning it the name “London Planetree” (in England, “Sycamore” refers to a type of maple tree).  Its parents are the good old American Sycamore, a common sight in Eastern river valleys, and the Oriental Planetree, from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.  This particular selection, ‘Suttneri,’ has been grown since 1896.

The Details

Just an awesome specimen of a tree. Green and white variegated foliage is only one of its many features. Suttneri is a great shade tree, a little smaller than the traditional Sycamore but still does the job beautifully. The bark is mottled and shows shades of gray, tan and white - simply stunning! Plant this Variegated Sycamore as a specimen in your yard, along streets, in groves - everywhere!

How to Grow

Planetrees are tough—famous for their tolerance of the smog, smoke, and hard-packed soils that go along with city life.  They are often used as street trees for 30 or 40 years and then removed before they get too big, or they’re “pollarded” (specially pruned in a drastic sort of way to keep them small).  Maybe you have the room to let one naturally live out its long life?  Anthracnose is a disease that can affect Sycamores, causing dieback of twigs and branches, but hybrid varieties like ‘Suttneri’ are largely immune.
