Fast-growing trees are always in demand, and Autumn Blaze® Maple is one of the fastest and most popular trees around.  This large shade tree can put on three feet of growth each year—you’ll be hanging the kids’ swing from its sturdy branches in no time.  Or, plant two and hang a hammock for yourself!  You’ll love the rich, raspberry-red fall color this hybrid tree inherited from its Red Maple mother (its daddy was a Silver Maple), and you’ll appreciate the lack of “helicopters” it produces (and unwanted seedlings).  On top of all that, Autumn Blaze® thrives in just about any sunny site in any type of soil.  City arborists named it their “Tree of the Year” in 2004.

The Story

In 1933, a man named Oliver Freeman, working at the National Arboretum, made the brilliant move of crossing our native Red Maple with the native Silver Maple.  Many of the offspring inherited the best assets from each parent—the lightening-fast growth and tough constitution of the Silver and the fiery autumn foliage of the Red.  These types of crosses became known as “Freeman” crosses, and in the late 1960s, Glenn Jeffers of Fostoria, Ohio developed his own Freeman hybrid, naming it Autumn Blaze®.  It went on the market in 1980.

The Details

Call off the Fire Department - your tree's not really ablaze! But the brilliant red-orange fall color is certain to set your garden "on fire"! This eye-catching specimen tree is a cross between a Red Maple and Silver Maple - taking the best attributes from both trees and creating a tree with the beauty and strength of the Red Maple and the vigor and adaptability of the Silver Maple. This is one awesome Maple!

How to Grow

Autumn Blaze Maple is one of the Bower & Branch Grower favorites and makes our top 10 list for Trees for the American Landscape.

Questions & Answers

Q: Maples have a lot of surface roots that can cause problems with turf. Does this one have the same issues? Are there any Red Maple varieties that don't have such a disruptive surface root problem?

A: Our growers discussed this at length and offer the following response... Surface roots and how aggressive they are is determined not only by Tree variety but also conditions, planting site, age and other factors. No in-depth study has been done on this subject in any great detail - only observation.

Maples overall seem to have more aggressive surface roots - one of our growers remembers being able to sit on the surface roots of Sugar Maples while growing up in New England. The world's largest Douglas Fir in Oregon has surface roots over 6' tall above the ground!

We believe that of all the Maples, Sugar Maples will have the most passive surface roots. To avoid surface roots in total you may want to consider Linden, Elm or even Oak.

The Maples do however have charm that is not easily matched and the root issue may be worth those benefits. Our grower planted an Autumn Blaze at his home last Fall, 12' off the driveway and expects no issues for either the lawn or the driveway.

Generally, surface root issues are close to the tree - a simple care bed installed around the tree would benefit all - the turf and the tree, if that is possible.
