Weeping Yoshino Flowering Cherry will make your heart sing when it breaks out in a cascade of shimmering white or pale pink blossoms in early spring. A weeping version of one of the biggest stars of Washington, D.C.’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival, this photogenic flowering tree may be even more elegant than the original Yoshino, if that’s possible. In time it forms a grand dome-shaped canopy, and kids as well as the young-at-heart will want to step inside the magical space underneath its branches. Plant Weeping Yoshino Cherry in the front yard for passersby to marvel at and it will soon become a neighborhood treasure.

The Story

Flowering Cherries are synonymous with Japan, and so they were the obvious choice when Japan decided to gift America with a shipment of 2,000 trees in 1910. Unfortunately, that load was found to be buggy and diseased and had to be burned.  In 1912, Japan tried again, and this time sent 3,000 healthy trees.  In 2012, the U.S. celebrated that 100-year anniversary by presenting to Japan 3,000 Flowering Dogwoods.  Shidare Yoshino was first grown in Japan in the late 1800s. Shidare means “Cascading,” and Yoshino is a mountain in Japan.

The Details

A weeping version of the Yoshino Flowering Cherry - and boy is it a beaut! Pale pink/white blooms cover the pendulous branches in spring and it is simply breathtaking. Be sure to plant this tree where you can see it from every angle, from every window of your house, for every satellite photo on Google Earth - it's that magnificent. A great tree to plant in smaller spaces.

How to Grow

Yoshino Cherries tend to live fast and die young, but they sure turn some heads along the way.  They typically live about 20 years, though the many centenarians in the Capitol prove that Flowering Cherries can survive much longer with intensive care.  Give this tree full sun, regular irrigation, and soil that drains well to afford it the best chance of living a longer-than-normal life.  Take care to never damage the bark with lawnmowers or string trimmers.  This fast growing tree is actually a hybrid, and it sizes up quickly.
