The Story
E.H. Wilson Mimosa is a true story of survival. Ernest Henry Wilson, also known as Ernest Henry “Chinese” Wilson is responsible for introducing thousands of Asian plant species to the West. In the early 1900’s he became a collector for Arnold Arboretum in Boston Massachusetts. During a visit to Korea in 1918, he collected seeds from a cultivated Mimosa tree in the hotel courtyard. Only a few seeds were collected and brought back to Boston. Four years later the seedling were planted in the Arboretum, but after the first winter all but one died. This little champion was named the E.H. Wilson Mimosa and thanks to the efforts of E.H. Wilson and the Arnold Arboretum we now have a beautiful tropical tree that can withstand New England winters.
The Details
If you like flowers, then this is the tree for you. Silky pink flowers bloom through summer. You will enjoy the delicate fragrance and unique green leaves this wonderful tree has to offer you and your landscape.
How to Grow
Although they’re native to China, Mimosa trees are often associated with the South. They love the heat there. They hardly ever need to be watered once established, and they don’t even complain if a little salt gets thrown their way if the sidewalks get icy in winter and need to be cleared. ‘E.H. Wilson’ brings the added bonus of improved cold-hardiness—down to about -15°F. The only issue with Mimosas is fusarium wilt. It doesn’t always kill the plant, though—often the afflicted tree will spring back from the roots.
