Our Aunt Dee Wisteria will bring a romantic feel to your landscape each spring with its long clusters of lightly fragrant lavender flowers dripping from every branch. If you’ve always loved Wisteria for its dreamy blossoms but were afraid this fast-growing vine would take over your house, we have some good news: this native selection is less rampant than the usual form, and we’ve trained it into a tree so that it can stand on its own. As a bonus, this lovely vine-turned-tree may delight you with a repeat performance of blooms later in the season, too! We not only offer Aunt Dee in tree form, but as a part of our Tree Art line we also offer a “Trunk Twist” version with a fun coiled trunk.

The Story
Thomas Nuttall, an English botanist and ornithologist who was fascinated with American flora and fauna, named Wisteria after his friend, Caspar Wistar. Wistar was a Philadelphia-born doctor and anatomy professor at the University of Pennsylvania. The spark that ignited his interest in medicine came at 16, when he volunteered to help care for wounded Revolutionary War soldiers after the Battle of Germantown broke out near his home. The selection ‘Aunt Dee’ was introduced by Minnesota Landscape and Nursery Association Hall of Famer Brad Pederson. His great-aunt was the inspiration for the name.
The Details
Not many people will have this in their garden - guaranteed! We've taken the typical Wisteria vine and trained it into a twist so as it matures it will become stronger and keep the twisty shape. What a whimsical treat - a perfect addition to a children's garden, don't you think? Bright green foliage covers the top portion of the tree throughout the season with clusters of light purple blooms appearing in late spring/early summer.
How to Grow
Wisteria is usually grown as a vine, but why settle for “the usual”? We have not only trained Aunt Dee to grow as a small tree, but also encouraged it to develop a cool twisty trunk. You’ll want to keep this tree staked until the trunk is strong enough to fully support the top, and you can help it out by keeping the top trimmed so it’s not too heavy. This plant wants its head in the sun. Any kind of soil is suitable unless it is very dry.
