Now here’s a conversation piece for your garden that’s not only fun but functional:  our First Fruits™ 3-in-1 Apple tree will give you three different kinds of apples from one tree!  This funky tree looks pretty much like any other Apple tree, but our growers have cleverly grafted three different varieties to it.  This ingenious creation saves space, and many home growers find that one tree meets their apple needs anyway.  Your tree may include any three of the following Apple varieties:  Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Red McIntosh, BraeburnWinesap, Jonathan, Melrose, Wealthy, Gravenstein, Yellow Transparent, Semi-Dwarf Yellow Transparent, Semi-Dwarf Fuji, or Semi-Dwarf Gala.  We cannot guarantee which three varieties you’ll receive.

The Story

Grafting is an ancient craft that has been practiced for the past 2,500 years.  It’s standard practice in fruit tree production—in fact, just about every single apple, pear, peach, cherry, plum, or orange you’ve ever eaten has come from a grafted tree.  Usually three varieties aren’t grafted to one tree, like our 3-in-1 Apple, however… New York artist Sam Van Aken has attracted a lot of attention recently for his project called The Tree of 40 Fruit.*  Yep, it’s just what it sounds—a tree grafted with 40 varieties of Plums, Peaches, Apricots, Nectarines, and Cherries!  (No Apples, though.)

The Details

In Germany it used to be customary to plant a tree when a child was born to the household.  A Pear tree was planted for a baby girl and an Apple for a boy.  What a lovely tradition!  Maybe our 3-in-1 Apple tree could celebrate triplets?

How to Grow

Plant your First Fruits™ 3-in-1 Apple tree in full sun in an open area with good air circulation (to discourage common Apple diseases).  Water it regularly, but never make it sit in waterlogged soil.  Most Apple trees need another Apple nearby to pollinate the flowers and ensure good fruit set, but each variety of the 3-in-1 Apple has two built-in pollinator partners, so you should be good to go.  A Crabapple can also do the job, and one planted in your yard or a neighbor’s will provide extra insurance for lots of crunchy, sweet apples for you to pick.  And please don’t forget that our fruit tree experts here at Bower & Branch™ will be happy to answer any questions you may have!
