Emerald Green Arborvitae is the go-to plant for creating living green walls in narrow places.  At a spacing of 2-3 feet, a row of Emeralds will fill in to make a solid evergreen privacy screen that will block views into your space, muffle noise, and provide a quiet, deep green background for roses or other flowering plants you’d like to grow.  This versatile tree can also be shaped into fun topiary shapes, and as a part of our Fresco™ topiary line, we are pleased to offer Emerald Green Arborvitae in a spiral form as well!

The Story

Eastern Arborvitae sometimes goes by the name “White Cedar,” though we prefer “Arborvitae,” because it means “Tree of Life.”  This name refers to an episode in 1536, when French explorer Jacques Cartier’s 110-man crew had begun to die of scurvy while wintering in Canada.  An Iroquois tribesmember gave the remaining men a tea brewed from the native Arborvitae trees (the foliage contains Vitamin C), and they made a swift recovery.  Emerald Green Arborvitae is a dwarf form of that life-giving tree and originated at a Danish nursery in 1950.  We give Emerald Green a new spin here by training it into a funky spiral shape.

The Details

Unlike many other evergreen trees, such as Spruce or Juniper, Emerald Green Arborvitae isn’t prickly, but soft to the touch.  It’s fragrant, too, and a pleasure to trim.  Perhaps its aromatic foliage is why Eastern Arborvitae is also known as “White Cedar”—even though it isn’t a true Cedar tree.

How to Grow

All you Edward Scissorhands out there, sharpen your shears!  This special Fresco™ Spiral Topiary Emerald Green Arborvitae will have to be trimmed a couple of times a year to keep its stylish shape.  Just clip off the feathery new growth without cutting into the older branches.  This dapper, formal evergreen specimen tree is otherwise an easygoing addition to your landscape.  It grows in almost any kind of soil, in full sun or light shade.  Give it a good drink during dry spells.  If it starts to turn brown, it’s too late!  In deer country, protect this tree with a repellant, or you may get some unsolicited help with your pruning.
