The Story
From the folks at J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Oregon (who brought us the wildly popular Red Sunset® Maple) comes Redpointe®, a top performer in their extensive Red Maple trials. This superior new shade tree has only been on the market since 2006, but JFS had evaluated it for 12 years before giving it their stamp of approval. They found it to be faster growing than other Red Maples, as well as more tolerant of high pH soils and more pyramidal in shape. It also colors up earlier than other Red Maples, showing hints of scarlet as early as the last week of September in Oregon.
The Details
This tree isn’t just a joy in autumn. After a long winter, you’ll also come to celebrate Redpointe® Maple’s tiny but intensely red flowers that arrive with the first warm breath of spring. The allergy-prone members of your household will breathe a little easier, too—the blossoms are female and contribute no aggravating pollen to the atmosphere!
How to Grow
Red Maple is an obliging, adaptable native tree that puts up with less-than-ideal growing conditions and can survive even in urban landscapes. There are a couple of things to keep in mind, however. First, its bark is thin and vulnerable to damage, so be sure to keep string trimmers and lawnmowers well away from the trunk of your tree. Also, like many Maples, this is a shallow-rooted tree, so growing other plants underneath it will be a challenge. Otherwise, a sunny spot and the use of the Bower & Branch™ Water Element along with our Soil Enhancer and Fertilizer Element will enable Redpointe® or any other Red Maple tree you plant to flourish!
