With a cascading form like a soothing green waterfall, the Weeping Katsura Tree brings a feeling of serenity to the landscape. This tree will bring a smile to your face every time you glimpse its graceful, flowy form. In autumn, this tree will bring you a big chuckle when the leaves—oddly enough—smell like cotton candy as they fall! Your poor puzzled guests and passersby will wonder where that sugary scent could possibly be coming from. Weeping Katsura will also delight you in fall with a fine display of radiant yellow foliage that sometimes carries hints of orange.

The Story

The Katsura Tree is native to China and Japan, where it has long been cherished as an incomparably beautiful tree. It is woven into legends there—one says that the “man in the moon” tends a huge Katsura Tree on the moon; another says that the Katsura is the bridge between earth and sky. Katsura’s appreciation in this country has been slower to come, and it’s still an undeservedly uncommon tree in the U.S. This stunning weeping version was discovered on American soil, however. The late, legendary Kentucky plantsman Theodore Klein discovered it at an Indiana nursery around 1960. It also goes by the name ‘Amazing Grace’ Weeping Katsura Tree.

The Details

The Weeping Katsura Tree forms a broad umbrella shape that will sweep the ground if left unpruned. The kids will enjoy hiding inside its canopy, and even long after they’re grown, the caramelly-sweet scent of its autumn leaves will be forever etched into their memories of home and playing under that tree. Grown-ups in the household, too, will come to look forward to the ritual of detecting the first whiff of Katsura each year!

How to Grow

Like the regular Katsura Tree, the Weeping Katsura is a fast-growing tree and won’t take long to become a head-turning specimen. This tree appreciates full sun but doesn’t like to dry out—at least during the first few years. Using the Bower & Branch™ Water Element will ensure that your tree receives the proper amount of irrigation during that critical establishment period. Weeping Katsura rarely needs pruning and is remarkably free of disease and insect worries, so this is one tree that won’t put a strain on your already busy schedule. Simply let it do its thing and enjoy the show for years to come!
