The Story
This funky new tree originated in Oregon at the nursery of Crispin Silva, a Mexican immigrant who moved to the U.S. as a young man. Silva had received an electrical engineering degree in his home country, but couldn’t find work in the U.S. in his field, so he got a job at a nursery instead. There he developed great skill at growing trees from seed and later went on to start his own nursery. Silva has discovered several new tree introductions, and some have joked that his nursery must sit atop a toxic waste site for the all the interesting mutants that have appeared there! No, that’s just what happens when you sow a LOT of seeds and have a keen eye.
The Details
Japanese Silverbell flowers dangle from their branches and are best viewed from below. What a perfect place for an intimate seating area! From a bench or chair placed under its canopy, you’ll be able to gaze up at Emerald Frost’s shimmering white blossoms in spring and its jazzy variegated foliage all season.
How to Grow
Plant your Emerald Frost Japanese Silverbell tree where it will be shaded by other trees or buildings from the hot afternoon sun so that the foliage doesn’t scorch; morning sun is fine. It likes moist but well-drained soil. Pests and diseases are of no concern to this delicate-looking but sturdy tree, so if it’s properly sited, caring for it will be a breeze. The only maintenance you’ll want to do is to prune out branches that sport all-green leaves, should they appear. Because Emerald Frost has so little green chlorophyll, it’s a slow grower. Its growth is easy to maintain, and it will never get out of control.
