Our Emerald Green Arborvitae Teardrop Poodle Topiary Tree is a dapper little evergreen accent plant for those more formal areas of your landscape close to the house. With its stand-at-attention upright habit, it’s the perfect tree to have standing guard at your front door—either alone or as a matching pair. This handsome poodle tree gets its name from the way the globes of foliage are stacked along the trunk like a poodle’s tail; in this variation, the uppermost cluster of foliage is shaped like a teardrop and comes to a point at the top. All year long this distinctive teardrop poodle tree will lend structure and character to the high-traffic areas of your landscape, while taking up little room and never outgrowing its allotted space.
Arborvitae means “Tree of Life,” and there’s a story behind that. Emerald Green Arborvitae is a selection of Eastern Arborvitae, an evergreen tree native to the northeastern U.S. and well into Canada. In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier and his crew spent a brutal winter in what is now Quebec, and the men began to suffer—and die—from scurvy. The native Iroquois people knew of the curative powers of Eastern Arborvitae and taught the Frenchmen to make a tea from the needles and bark. The vitamin C in the Arborvitae tea restored the remaining men to health, and they were able to return to France and tell the world about the miraculous Tree of Life.
Eastern Arborvitae would make a pungent tea indeed! (We think we’ll stick to orange juice for our vitamin C allowance.) While the needles and branches might not taste so good, the fresh, resinous Christmas-Tree aroma released when they are cut will make pruning your Emerald Green Arborvitae Teardrop Poodle Topiary Tree a pleasure.
