Shiloh Splash Variegated River Birch
Preorder now for Spring delivery.
With their pretty, papery, tan and peach bark, River Birches are wonderful "winter interest" trees, but here's one that positively glows in summertime, too! Shiloh Splash River Birch features variegated leaves that appear to have been dunked in creamy-white paint. This uncommon and much sought-after new ornamental tree will lighten up your entryway garden, patio area, or any of the beds around your home that could use some zing. Who needs flowers? Foliage can be just as flashy. Take it a step further and plant Shiloh Splash in front of evergreens like Norway Spruce, Canadian Hemlock, or White Pine like the landscape architects do, and watch that foliage really pop!

The Story
Once in a while, for no reason at all, a normal green plant will put out one branch that looks different than the rest, called a “sport.” This is what happened one day in 1999 at John Allen’s Shiloh Nursery in Harmony, North Carolina to a River Birch seedling of his. Each leaf had a wide, creamy-white margin and just a few brushstrokes of green. Now, oftentimes these sports are not stable, and the plant eventually goes back to producing green leaves. Not so for this plant, and Shiloh Splash was born.
The Details
Now here's something you don't see everyday! This River Birch has variegated leaves - green with ivory margins... something to get the neighbors talking - that's for sure! Named after the nursery that discovered it (Shiloh Nursery in North Carolina), this exquisite specimen is pest resistant and easy to grow - leaving you no excuses!
How to Grow
The green color in leaves is chlorophyll—the stuff that allows plants to grow. Variegated leaves have less green, and therefore less chlorophyll, so variegated plants grow more slowly than all-green ones. Shiloh Splash grows only half as fast as a regular River Birch and will probably stay smaller, too. Otherwise, Shiloh Splash is no different than its green brothers—preferring a moist site but making do with a drier one, liking full sun or light shade. It is rarely troubled by pests or disease of any sort.
