The Story

Emerald Green Arborvitae is a special selection of Eastern Arborvitae, a venerable long-lived tree native to the northeastern United States and Canada. It can be found clinging to rocky cliffs or soaking up extra moisture in the lowlands in the wild. Native peoples knew of the Arborvitae’s healing powers (“Arborvitae” means “Tree of Life”), and they taught early French explorers to make a tea of the needles to combat scurvy. In the mid-1500s, Eastern Arborvitae was the first North American tree to sail across the Atlantic on ships to the Old World for planting in European gardens. In fact, Emerald Green Arborvitae originated in a Danish nursery (about 400 years later!).

The Details

No doubt when European gardeners got their hands on Eastern Arborvitae, they soon discovered what an excellent medium it is for creating topiaries. This sturdy tree grows dense and full, at a slow pace, and takes well to shearing. We’re especially proud of our Emerald Green Arborvitae Square and Spiral Topiary Tree. It’s fit for display on any grand European (or American) estate!
