Our Dwarf Alberta Spruce Two Ball Spiral Topiary is a one-of-a-kind specimen tree with a fun, modern vibe. Our talented crew at the Bower & Branch nursery shapes each one of these unique specialty trees by hand from normal Christmas tree-shaped Dwarf Alberta Spruces. After your tree receives its new ’do, it will have a round ball of foliage at the base, followed by another ball, and then a spiral at the very top. This quirky tree will add personality, flair, and a bit of the unexpected to your landscape beds or to the large containers near your front door or patio. Gentle shaping is required to keep your topiary tree looking sharp, but we are standing by to help should you need any guidance.
The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is a naturally occurring mutant of the White Spruce, a common forest tree of the northern U.S. and Canada. The first to spot this pint-sized Spruce Tree were a couple of remarkable men representing Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum. John George Jack was a self-taught horticulturist with only six months of high school education who became a professor at Harvard; Alfred Rehder was the guy who named and cataloged the thousands of plants that others brought back from plant expeditions. In 1904, the two went plant huntingtogether in the Canadian Rockies and brought back the first Dwarf Alberta Spruce, which they found growing wild near a train station.
With its tight, tidy habit and slow growth rate, the Dwarf Alberta Spruce makes a fantastic topiary subject. This popular small evergreen tree is usually carved into a poodle tail or a spiral-shaped topiary, but our growers have given this one a little extra pizzazz. Our Dwarf Alberta Spruce Two Ball and Spiral Topiary Tree is an exquisite accent tree you won’t find anywhere else.
