The Story

Boulevard Falsecypress is a dwarf version of the majestic Sawara Falsecypress, a large evergreen forest tree native to Japan. Sawara Falsecypress was once considered a sacred tree in Japan, and its lumber has been used in building many holy shrines and temples there. This compact, frosty blue-green rendition of the Sawara Tree originated in the U.S. around 1934 at Boulevard Nurseries in Newport, Rhode Island. Today Boulevard Falsecypress Trees and Oriental Pompom Topiary Trees are loved all over the world for their cool blue-green color and the delightfully soft texture of their foliage. Tree expert Michael Dirr describes Boulevard Falsecypress as having “the feel of a soft fluffy stuffed animal.” We’d have to agree!

The Details

Pruning Boulevard Falsecypress into an Oriental Pompom Topiary Tree not only highlights the cloudlike quality of its dreamy silver-blue foliage, but also puts more of its rugged, peeling, ruddy brown bark on display. The contrast between these hard and soft elements will add powerful visual appeal to your landscape all year long.
