In the 1930s, Frank Hetz, owner of Fairview Evergreen Nurseries (a family business still in operation in Fairview, Pennsylvania), ordered 100 Juniper seedlings from a California grower. The type of Juniper Hetz bought was the California Juniper, a species that’s cold-hardy only in areas where winter temperatures never fall below the teens. Needless to say, the experiment on the frosty shores of Lake Erie was a failure... except for one plant that survived. Later testing revealed that the surviving Hetz Juniper (a.k.a. the Fairview Juniper), was actually a hardy Chinese Juniper that had been sent by mistake. Hetz Juniper’s lovely blue-green foliage and its toughness has since made it one of the most popular landscape plants ever, and its tolerance for pruning has made it a wonderful topiary subject.
Hetz Juniper is a female form of Juniper, meaning that it produces silvery blue berries that the birds (especially cedar waxwings) will enjoy. The cones hug the branches tightly, so even after you finish trimming your Hetz Juniper Spiral Topiary Tree, there will probably still be some treats for the birds.
How to Grow
Your Hetz Columnar Juniper Spiral Topiary Tree doesn’t need a lot of babying in order to thrive. It’s cold-hardy, disease-resistant, and drought-tolerant once established, and it won’t chase cars or bark at the mailman. (Who’s a good boy?) Plant your Hetz Columnar Spiral Tree in a site with all-day sun and well-drained soil and it will be happy. The only task you’ll have to stay on top of is trimming. When your Spiral Tree starts to look a little shaggy, shear the new growth back to restore its tidy shape. That’s all there is to it!
