The Story
In much of the U.S., hardly a neighborhood exists where River Birch hasn’t found its way into the landscape. This native tree’s handsome peeling bark and tough constitution have made it so popular that it has almost become a cliché. Summer Cascade breathes new life into the species. Its unique weeping habit brings a look never seen before in River Birch. Discovered as a chance seedling at Shilo Nursery in North Carolina in 1996, it has since become a hit the world over.
The Details
A flowing "waterfall" of glossy green foliage decorates this special weeping Birch throughout the season. Leaves turn yellow as fall approaches and dangling catkins are visible once leaves have fallen. The weeping habit of Summer Cascade develops at an early age. The beautiful peeling bark, the same awesome reddish-brown colors as the species, also develops early on so you have plenty of time to enjoy this special tree. Graceful, arching branches make this Birch a wonderful choice for a specimen tree or focal point in your landscape.
How to Grow
Summer Cascade is a fast-growing tree, bulking up to specimen size in no time. You can trim it as much or as little as you like. Most like to give it a shaggy “bowl” haircut, raising the canopy to show off the peach- and parchment-colored bark. This tree revels in a sunny site with moist soil (like near a drain spout), although after it’s been in the ground for a year or so, it tolerates drought, too. This drought resistance is ensured by a dense mass of roots, so anything planted underneath must be able to compete.
