The Story

The slim, spire-like Emerald Green Arborvitae has been gracing our gardens since the 1950s, when this distinctive small columnar tree was discovered at a nursery in Denmark. Because of its Danish roots, you’ll sometimes see it listed as ‘Smaragd’ Arborvitae; ‘Smaragd’ is Danish for ‘Emerald’ (but don’t ask us how to pronounce it!). Emerald Green is a selection of Eastern Arborvitae, a conifer tree that’s actually native to the northeastern U.S. and Canada. Although Emerald Green was born overseas, it’s a North American at heart and is supremely adapted to the climate here in its ancestral homeland.
