The Scarlet Sentinel™ Columnar Apple Tree is an Apple Tree in skinny jeans! This sleek, modern take on the traditional fruit tree has a cool, compact, narrow-columnar shape that adds a distinctive vertical element to any landscape, while taking up hardly any room at all. It also produces beautiful white Apple blossoms in spring. Far from simply being eye candy, however, Scarlet Sentinel™ is practical as well. In September and October, the crisp, juicy, red-blushed apples will ripen and provide your family with plenty of healthy snacking. Plant Scarlet Sentinel™ near another Apple or Crabapple Tree for good fruit set—or better yet, pair it with our Golden Sentinel™ Columnar Apple Tree, and the dashing duo will pollinate each other.

The Story
Scarlet Sentinel™ Columnar Apple arose from a breeding program in Canada in the 1980s and ’90s that sought to improve the few pole-type Apple Trees that were on the market at the time. Three different Apple Trees with superior traits were hybridized and the offspring evaluated to determine the best of the best. Scarlet Sentinel™ emerged as a clear winner with sweet, succulent, snow-white flesh, good disease resistance, and apples that were excellent keepers (the fruit holds well in the fridge until as late as February). This is also the most compact of the columnar types and will perform very well in a container on your patio or deck.
The Details
The Scarlet Sentinel™ Apple Tree produces abundant annual crops of very large red dessert apples that are great for wholesome, fresh snacking right from the tree. Bred from McIntosh, Red Delicious, and an English Apple called Discovery, they have a sweet, mild flavor and are a delicious source of vitamin C as well as valuable antioxidants and fiber.
How to Grow
Growing the Scarlet Sentinel™ Columnar Apple Tree is easier than growing other Apple Trees, as there is no special pruning knowledge needed—you’ll simply need to thin the fruits a bit if you get an overabundance of them. Like other Apple Trees, you’ll want to plant Scarlet Sentinel™ in a site where it can bask in all-day sun and have well-drained soil at its feet. Air should be able to circulate freely all around, which will help to ward off diseases that can afflict Apple Trees. Proper irrigation, fertilization, and hygiene will also help to prevent problems. Although issues may still arise, our talented team of growers is on hand to answer any questions you may have. You can call on them anytime at grower@bowerandbranch.com.
