The Story
A majestic native tree cherished for its magnificent fall color and handsome form—not to mention as the source of maple syrup—the Sugar Maple Tree has a special place in nearly every northerner’s heart. (This is also the leaf on the Canadian flag.) The Commemoration® Sugar Maple was selected by the late Willet “Bill” Wandell of Champaign, Illinois from a crop of seedlings at his nursery. The tree stood out right away, he said, because it grew five feet the first year, and it continued to grow twice as fast as other Sugar Maples. It was introduced in the early 1980s and continues to be one of the finest selections on the market.
The Details
Wandell’s new tree was also an early standout because of its remarkably thick, dark, waxy leaves. The leathery quality of the leaves helps them hold up better in the elements; they’re less likely to scorch in very hot summers or to tatter in windy locations. Wandell noted thatCommemoration® Sugar Maple begins to turn color (orange with hints of red and pink) 10 to 14 days before most other Sugar Maples and manages to hold its color after most others havedropped their foliage.
How to Grow
Sugar Maples perform best in cool northern climates, although Commemoration® is more forgiving than most of heat and humidity. It will be slower growing and have more of a yellow-orange fall color in the South. Plant this regal tree in full sun to light shade in rich, well-drained soil and water regularly. A layer of wood or bark mulch will help keep the roots cool and moist. In most cases, Commemoration® is not a great tree for the city, but in suburban and neighborhoods where the tree can stretch out its roots and isn’t bothered by pollution, it is stellar.
