The Story

Hinoki Cypress is a Japanese tree that can take many forms, from cute rock garden bun to majestic forest giant. Its foliage ranges from deep lustrous green to yellow with a splash of whiteas in this selection. Dwarf Golden Hinoki Cypress grows very slowly into a graceful slim pyramidal shape with little to no pruning on your part. It was discovered in 1966 by a Dutchman named Jan Spek, who discovered a yellow branch “sport” on a small green pyramidal Hinoki at his nursery. A sport is simply botanical lingo for a spontaneous mutation that appears naturally once in a while on plants.

The Details

Unlike some conifers, the Dwarf Golden Hinoki Cypress is a friendly evergreen with no prickles. Instead of sharp needles, it displays beautiful wavy fans of foliage that are soft to the touch. In fact, running your fingers through its leaves is the best way to groom it, should it get a bit of brown foliage on the interior. Of course, you always can pet your Hinoki anytime you like!

How to Grow

Give this luxe small specimen tree a premium spot in your landscape with bright light (but no scorching afternoon sun if you live in a hot climate) and rich, well-drained soil. Dwarf Golden Hinoki Cypress also appreciates some protection from icy winter winds, which can cause some browning of the outside foliage. It will need regular water during establishment, and a layer of mulch will help keep the root zone cool and moist. If these needs are met, this elegant tree will require very little additional maintenance and will be a cherished part of your landscape for many years to come.
