Pink Heartbreaker® Groundcover
It’s a groundcover! It’s a tree! It’s a groundcover tree? That’s right—our brand new Pink Heartbreaker Redbud Groundcover Tree is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Usually staked to form a small upright weeping specimen tree, the beautiful native Pink Heartbreaker Redbud has received a radical makeover from our innovative growers. They’ve allowed it to flow along the ground to create a carpet of bold heart-shaped leaves to dress up the ground layer of your entryway garden, foundation plantings, or anywhere you want to create some unexpected drama. You can also plant your Pink Heartbreaker Redbud Groundcover Tree in a large container or at the top of a retaining wall and let it cascade gracefully over the edge. Need we say it?—a Bower & Branch™ exclusive.

The Pink Heartbreaker Weeping Redbud is a tree that nearly did break the hearts of its discoverers. The unusual tree—a chance seedling with an elegant weeping habit—nearly died. It was growing in a field belonging to Bower & Branch’s founder, Don Eaton, in July of 2002. The field was slated to be cleared for replanting, so Don moved the little tree to his own garden, even though digging up a tree in summer is dicey (growers usually dig field-grown trees in late winter or fall). The traumatized tree put out only one new branch the following spring. Luckily, that was enough for Don to be able to propagate the new tree, and his wife Kathy gave it the name ‘Pink Heartbreaker’.
Before its rounded leaves appear in spring, the zigzag branches of your Pink Heartbreaker Redbud Groundcover Tree will be adorned with pretty pink flowers. Appearing as they do at ground level, you might at first glance mistake the blossoms for wildflowers that grace the forest floor. You can plant real wildflowers amongst the branches, like Trilliums and Dutchman’s Breeches, to enhance the effect.
How to Grow
The Pink Heartbreaker Redbud Groundcover Tree is an adaptable tree that’s easy to please. Plant it in a sunny or lightly shaded area with good drainage (Redbuds don’t like “wet feet”). You’ll want to mulch the area under your Groundcover Tree to replicate the woodsy conditions that Redbuds prefer and also to make a nice backdrop for the flowers and foliage. Give it room to ramble or allow it to spill over the edge of a container or wall. Pink Heartbreaker is a fast-growing tree, but it responds well to pruning if you want to rein it in.
