The Story

The Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud Tree was the result of nine years of careful work by North Carolina State University’s Dr. Dennis Werner. Dr. Werner started in 2001 with a purple-leaved Forest Pansy Redbud, a weeping Lavender Twist® Redbud, and a nest of bumblebees to serve as matchmakers. The pairing produced 23 seeds, which Werner grew on to flowering size, and then he let them hybridize together again. This resulted in thousands of seeds, which produced all kinds of different seedlings. The best one was Ruby Falls. Because Ruby Falls is naturally weeping, it’s usually staked to become a small tree, but we wondered what would happen if we let it scramble along the ground. We loved the unique effect, and we think you will, too.

The Details

In early spring, before the sumptuous purple-red leaves unfold, you’ll enjoy your Ruby Falls Redbud Groundcover Tree’s parade of sweet little lavender-pink flowers. The blooms look like tiny hummingbirds (pick one and see!), and they’re edible, too. Sprinkle a few Redbud blossoms on a salad for the prettiest and most novel garnish your dinner guests will ever see.

How to Grow

Though it has gone through some cosmetic changes, the Ruby Falls Redbud Groundcover Tree is still a native Redbud at heart (like the Redbuds you see in the wild) and is well adapted to life in many parts of the country. It is a bit less cold-hardy than some other Redbuds and is suitable for zone 6 and above. Plant Ruby Falls in a sunny spot to bring out the richest color in its deep burgundy-red leaves, although it will grow well in light shade as well. Like all Redbuds, it appreciates regular irrigation and well-drained soils. A layer of shredded bark mulch will help to keep the roots cool and moist, while serving as a pleasing backdrop to the dainty flowers in spring and keeping the leaves out of the mud when they emerge.
