Preorder now for Spring delivery.
Your garden will be pretty as a picture when your Donald Wyman Crabapple Tree bursts into bloom in spring. When chilly days give way to mild spring weather, its pink buds will unfurl in a cloud of dazzling, pure white blossoms. The fragrant flowers will attract scores of happy, humming pollinators, which will turn the blooms into glossy red fruits by the hundreds in fall. The shiny scarlet crabapples, along with the golden autumn leaves, will make another lovely picture that you’ll enjoy seeing outside your window every day. The display lasts a long time, too, as Donald Wyman’s fruits last well into winter, when at last grateful birds will flock to your tree, creating yet another seasonal garden picture for you to celebrate.

The Story
There are hundreds of varieties of Crabapple Trees available, but most of the older selections have fallen by the wayside, replaced by newer trees with superior ornamental qualities and greater disease resistance. Only the very best of the older selections are still grown today, and Donald Wyman is one of these—a classic beauty with a clean bill of health. This stellar tree was named after a man who was the head horticulturist at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum for 35 years. Donald Wyman was so dedicated to plants that he worked at the Arboretum for free for six months when he first started there in 1935, in the depths of the Great Depression. He is best known for writing Wyman’s Gardening Encyclopedia, a guide still loved by professionals and amateurs alike.
The Details
You can harvest Donald Wyman’s profusion of fruits to make a tasty crabapple jelly if you’re into canning. Donald Wyman also serves as a good pollinator for most Apple Trees you may have that are in need of a partner to ensure good fruit set.
How to Grow
The Donald Wyman Crabapple is easy to please and makes a good tree for novice gardeners. Plant it in an open, sunny area with good air circulation. Donald Wyman isn’t picky about soil and will grow even in heavy clay as long as drainage is adequate. Use the Bower & Branch Elements™ Watering System to keep your tree well supplied with water during the establishment period so it can develop a strong root system. In subsequent years, it will be relatively drought tolerant. Do any pruning directly after blooming, except for suckers that appear at the base of the tree, which may be removed at any time.
