Dashing good looks—all year long! Our Mini Serbian Spruce is a classy small evergreen tree that’s sharply dressed in striking bicolored needles. The foliage on this exquisite conifer is rich green on top and silvery blue below, and the branches are held in a way that shows off lots of the silver color. The plant starts out life as a tight globe, becoming in time a broad pyramid of dense, handsome, blue-green foliage. Picture it anchoring your foundation plantings or entryway garden, or providing a year-round focal point in any of the mixed borders or island beds around your home. It’s a beaut!
Serbian Spruce, native to eastern Europe, was nearly wiped out in the last Ice Age. When the glaciers retreated, only a tiny population remained in what is now Serbia. This population, on Tara Mountain, was situated so that it was protected from the advancing ice, allowing it to live on to become a stately ornamental tree in temperate gardens around the world. The Mini Serbian Spruce (a.k.a. Dwarf Serbian Spruce) was discovered in a Dutch nursery around 1930. It appeared as a compact, slow-growing “sport,” or random mutation, of the standard Serbian Spruce Tree. Serbian Spruces in the wild can reach 100 feet in height, but this petite version will top out at 20 to 25 feet in ideal conditions (in the Pacific Northwest). In most cases, it is likely to reach only about 8 feet after many years.
The Mini Serbian Spruce is a good fit for your busy lifestyle. This low-maintenance wonder will put few demands on your cramped schedule. No pruning and no leaf-raking are required, and yet the plant will look smart and stylish at all times.
How to Grow
The Mini Serbian Spruce is such a special little tree, you might think it would be a diva when it comes to keeping it happy. Actually, it is easy to please. Plant this charmer in a site that receivesfull sun or part shade. Its soil should drain well but never become dusty-dry. Performance will be best on deep, loamy soils, although the tree adapts to less-than-perfect situations. It can even tolerate city life when given proper attention. Pests and diseases rarely trouble Mini Serbian Spruce, and deer are unlikely to browse it.
