The Story

Fall Fiesta® originated as a seedling that outperformed its siblings. Max Lamis of Bailey Nursery in Yamhill, Oregon, raised a crop of Sugar Maple seedlings using seed from the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Fall Fiesta® emerged as superior to its siblings and to other Sugar Maples on the market on several accounts. Most notably, it was found to be a more vigorous grower than other selections, growing as much as two feet per year. The new tree was also discovered to have an especially thick, waxy coating on the leaves, enabling them to hold up better in summer heat and wind. And of course, the fall color was dynamite.

The Details

Cold enough for ya? As its seed source was from Minnesota, it isn’t surprising that Fall Fiesta®Sugar Maple not only handles the heat, but can take the cold as well. The hardy tree is rated to zone 4, which means it tolerates winter lows down to -30°F.

How to Grow

Sugar Maples perform best in cool northern climates, although Fall Fiesta® is more forgiving than most of heat and humidity. It will be slower growing and have more of a yellow-orange fall color in the South. Plant this regal tree in full sun to light shade in rich, well-drained soil and water regularly. A layer of wood chips or shredded bark mulch will help keep the roots cool and moist. In most cases, Fall Fiesta® is not a great tree for the city, but in suburban and neighborhoods where the tree can stretch out its roots and isn’t bothered by pollution, it is stellar.
