Evergreen? Check. Hardy? Check. Handsome? Check. Mountbatten Juniper ticks all the boxes. This charismatic conifer features dense gray-green foliage on a slim, pyramidal framework. Use it as a stand-alone specimen to provide a structural accent in your landscape all year-round, or plant it as part of a privacy-giving screen. Make a uniform hedge with a row of Mountbatten Junipers, or mix things up with an assortment of evergreens, including Mountbatten as a key component. Tough as nails, it will survive winters where the mercury drops to -30ºF, and it will take high heat and drought in stride, too. The full package? Check!
Mountbatten is a selection of Chinese Juniper, which is native to (you guessed it) China, and also Japan and Mongolia. The Chinese Juniper is an amazingly diverse species that can take the form of anything from a sprawling groundcover to a towering tree. This particular introduction originated at Sheridan Nurseries near Toronto, Canada, in 1948. It gets its name from a branch of the British royal family (Prince Williams’ surname, though he never uses it, is Mountbatten-Windsor). Lord Mountbatten visited Canada shortly after the tree’s discovery and was pleased with the name choice.
You may want to keep Mountbatten Juniper trimmed as a neat, formal accent by pruning it annually. Just clean up the new growth each summer. However, if you do no trimming, you’ll allow more of the pretty blue berries to form. The berries make a nice show from fall into winter, or until the birds carry them all off.
How to Grow
Mountbatten Juniper is easy to please, provided it receives lots of sun and it’s planted in soil that drains well. As with any tree, regular irrigation is necessary during the establishment period; we recommend the Bower & Branch Elements™ Watering System to supply the right amount. After it has put down roots, it will be quite drought tolerant. Feed with Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer for optimum growth. Prune in summer if desired. Mountbatten is generally trouble-free, but if any concerns arise, please don’t hesitate to contact our expert growers for help at firstname.lastname@example.org.
