We think Royal Raindrops® Crabapple might be the perfect flowering tree. It offers year-round beauty, wildlife appeal, and pest and disease resistance all in one neat little package. In spring, this small ornamental tree will light up your landscape with raspberry-pink flowers that hum with the sounds of happy pollinators. In summer, the purple to bronze foliage stays clean and glossy, and in fall, the leaves take on orange and red tones (unusual for Crabapples). In winter, pull up a chair by the window, because songbirds will be dropping by to devour the tiny red crabapples. Royal Raindrops® has received rave reviews from growers and other tree experts across the country, and we know you'll love it, too!

The Story

The reason for this tree’s existence is about 90% skill and 10% luck.  Keith Warren, a 40-year employee of J. Frank Schmidt Nursery (he retired in 2014), selected this tree from a Crabapple program he began in 1990.  Royal Raindrops® traces its beginnings to a single fruit he plucked from a tree in JFS’s arboretum in 1994.  As a young plant, this tree outshined the rest with its burgundy foliage and superior disease resistance.  When it was old enough to flower and fruit, Keith knew he’d hit a home run.

The Details

Royalty never looked so good! Bright pinkish-red flowers come forth in spring followed by exceptional purple cutleaf foliage which transforms to gorgeous shades of orange and red in fall. This majestic Crabapple provides even more seasonal interest with persistent red fruit appearing in late summer/early fall, making this tree irresistible to birds! Royal Raindrops Crabapple also shows signs of great disease resistance - making this one irresistible tree!

How to Grow

Flowering Crabapples grow well in a wide range of soil conditions and should be planted in a sunny area of your yard; they can tolerate very light shade as well. As with all trees, keep your newly planted Crabapple watered. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine. Crabapples also like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. Once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season. Pruning Flowering Crabapples is fairly easy. Prune branches after your Crabapple is done flowering and cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear.
