Growth Facts

The Story

Made in America (from foreign parts). The Patriot Elm originated at the U.S. National Arboretum in a program designed to develop Elm Trees that would be resistant to the dreaded Dutch Elm disease. In 1980, USDA researcher, Dr. Alden “Denny” Townsend, crossed a European/Siberian hybrid Elm called Urban with a Chinese Elm called Prospector to produce seed that would give rise to 600 new hybrid Elm seedlings. Patriot was one of the best of the lot, showing outstanding resistance to Dutch Elm disease, as well as to the Elm leaf beetle. It was introduced to the public in 1993.

The Details

Patriot Elm is a strong performer in many regions of the country, from Texas to Iowa to Maine. It’s a resilient tree that can handle urban situations, too. Poor soil, clay, compaction, high pH, de-icing salts, and air pollution are no problem for this tough tree.

How to Grow

Plant it green side up! Patriot Elm is gratifying to grow even for novice gardeners. Give this easy-to-please tree lots of sunlight. It isn’t fussy about soil, but make sure it gets regular water, especially during the first few years of establishment. The Bower & Branch Elements™ Watering System will help you get it right. Be prepared for rapid growth—Patriot Elm can grow as much as 30 feet in 8 years! You may want to fertilize in poor soils, but go easy on the fertilizer in soils that are already rich. Prune in the fall if necessary.
