Splattered and streaked with white and green pigment, each leaf of the rare Floating Clouds Redbud is a mini modern art masterpiece! Our beloved native Eastern Redbud tree gets a hip new look in this one-of-a-kind variegated version to light up your entryway garden, patio area, or backyard landscaping. Besides the flashy foliage, you’ll also enjoy the sweet lavender-pink flowers that hug the bare, zigzag stems in early spring. Plant this small ornamental tree in front of dark evergreens, and the summer foliage will pop like fluffy white “clouds” against a stormy sky.

The Story

Floating Clouds is not the first variegated Redbud, but it’s the best.  It showed up in a batch of plain green seedlings one day at the nursery of Don and Jake Black of Iva, South Carolina.  The little tree’s foliage was splashed with more white than the older variegated clone, ‘Silver Cloud,’ and it burned less in full sun.  They sent the plant to famed Tennessee nurseryman Don Shadow, who named it and got it into production.  He named it after a Japanese Maple with a similar variegation pattern.

The Details

You'll be floating on clouds knowing this beaut is all yours. Rose pink flowers appear in spring before foliage emerges. Green heart-shaped leaves are quite literally splashed with white variegation, it's so gorgeous it's ridiculous!

How to Grow

The best location for this tree would be a site where it could receive full sun all morning, but less intense light during the hottest afternoon hours.  Of course, you’ll want to plant it front and center in your entryway landscape if you can.  Any type of soil is suitable for Floating Clouds, as long as the tree receives regular water and drainage is good.  If kept too thirsty, the leaves will scorch, but if kept too wet, the plant will drown.  This tree grows more slowly than ordinary Redbuds.
