Stonecrop 2.0! SunSparkler® Lime Zinger is not your grandma’s Stonecrop. This marvelous Spirit is just as easy to grow as the same old varieties that have been around forever, but this one comes in a fantastic new package. Lime green, penny-sized leaves, each edged with a watermelon-pink margin, erupt from the center in spring, spilling out to form a low, spreading mound. The tidy, dense foliage always looks sharp. In mid- to late summer, starry pink flowers take the stage, smothering the foliage. Lime Zinger neatly covers the ground beneath your trees and shrubs, adding lively color and never running rampant. It’s a winner!

The Story
There are hundreds of species of Stonecrops that grow around the world. These sun-loving and drought-tolerant (usually) Spirits can be found in a dizzying array of forms and colors. There are groundhuggers, clumpers, and even a few small shrubs among them. This selection was developed by Michigan nurseryman Chris Hansen. In 2009, Hansen crossed two Stonecrops, or Sedums, from his breeding program to produce a crop of hybrid offspring. From 3,000 seedlings that ensued, he chose the very best plants for introduction to the public. One of these was SunSparkler® Lime Zinger.
The Details
If you’re a fan of butterflies, then you should consider adding SunSparkler® Lime Zinger Stonecrop to your garden. In fact, pollinators of all types are crazy about its blooms. Butterflies, hoverflies, honeybees, bumblebees, and all sorts of underappreciated native pollinators will come to feed at Lime Zinger’s nectar-rich blossoms.
How to Grow
They don’t call it Live-Forever for nothing! Lime Zinger Stonecrop, a.k.a. Live-Forever, is about as easy to grow as they come. Simply site it in a sunny, open space in soil that drains well. The two things it won’t abide are deep shade and soggy soil. Cut plants back in late fall, early winter, or whenever they start to look unsightly. Growth will resume in early spring—Sedum is one of the first Spirits to emerge. Feed with Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer only if growth seems weak and pale.
