The Story
Tamukeyama (Ta-MOO-key-ah-ma) is not exactly a household word in the U.S., but Japanese gardeners have known this tree for 300 years. Its name, like so many other Japanese plants’ names, pays its respects to a mountain—in this case Mt. Tamukeya, in Kyushu. The mountain itself gets its name from tamuke, a solemn word meaning “spiritual offering.” New selections come and go, but Tamukeyama—on record as have been grown since 1710—soldiers on, outlasting them all. Its graceful, weeping habit and lacy, rich red foliage have been difficult to improve upon.
The Details
If you're looking for some excellent deep red color for your garden, then stop right here! Deep red foliage emerges in spring turning to a deeper purple-red in summer. Fall color brings about bright scarlet color - quite spectacular! This Japanese Maple is a more petite variety, so you'll be able to stick it in the garden almost anywhere!
How to Grow
Compared to most other red laceleaf Japanese maples, Tamukeyama is a more vigorous, faster-growing tree. You won’t have to wait forever for it to become a grand specimen. You may wish to shape your Tamukeyama with regular pruning, though this is not absolutely necessary. Your Bower & Branch™ tree has received the proper pruning to give it a good start in life, and no further pruning is usually required. Plant this tree in a site that gets morning sun and afternoon shade to bring out the best of its crimson color.
