Lookin’ sharp! Francee Hosta planted in the shady beds around your home will make a neat, formal impression. This classic Spirit makes a dapper mound of deep green foliage, each leaf edged with a crisp white margin. The variegation remains distinct throughout the entire growing season. A medium-sized Hosta that grows fast, Francee is especially useful as a border or groundcover. It quickly fills space with dense stands of handsome leaves that suppress weeds while presenting a polished appearance. Lavender, bell-shaped flowers in summer are a nice bonus; they offer sweet nectar to hummingbirds, too.

Hostas are native to Japan, China, and Korea, but they have many passionate fans around the world. Over the years, plant breeders (along with some home gardeners) have introduced new Hosta selections whenever they’ve found a plant with unique traits. As a result, there are now thousands of varieties to pick from! A Hosta breeder by the name of Minnie Klopping developed Francee Hosta in Nebraska in the 1970s. It was registered with the American Hosta Society in 1986. Because it held its variegation so well, it eventually became a common replacement for the old Albo-Marginata Hosta, which fades to green in the summer.
Hostas are shade plants, and Francee is happy there, but it is also one of the few Hostas that can handle a considerable amount of sun. With plenty of water, it can be grown in bright locations without burning, at least in the northern states.
How to Grow
Francee is best with morning sun and afternoon shade, but it is quite adaptable. Regular water is a must. Slugs may be problematic with Hostas, but they can be controlled with repeated applications of an iron phosphate product like Sluggo®, which is safe to use around pets. In deer-prone areas, treat with Plantskydd® to prevent grazing. Foliage will die back with the first frosts and can be cut back then. If you wish to dig and divide Francee, you can do it at any time, but late winter/early spring is best.
