You don’t know the power of the Dark Side. Dark Vader Lungwort will bring the gloomy, shady corners of your landscape to life! This stellar Spirit features deep green leaves handsomely marbled with silver markings; the foliage makes a fine show all season. As if that weren’t enough, scintillating flowers appear in late winter and early spring which actually change color. In bud, they’re rose-pink, but they soon turn purple, and, finally, a rich blue. Try Dark Vader in a north-facing foundation bed, or make it a star of your courtyard, patio, or woodland garden.

The Story

How did this pretty plant get a weird name like Lungwort? It all goes back to the doctrine of signatures, an idea that dates back to at least the 1600s. The theory was that the appearance of a plant indicated what part of the body it was meant to heal. For example, walnuts were considered food for the brain. With its oval-shaped leaves, marked with blotches and spots, Lungwort was thought to resemble diseased lungs and was believed in those days to be a cure for pulmonary infections (it is not). Dark Vader is a modern-day Lungwort selection that was introduced by Terra Nova Nurseries of Oregon in 2000.

The Details

Take advantage of Dark Vader Lungwort’s early bloom time by planting it with other early risers to create picturesque combinations. Use it under early-flowering trees like Serviceberry, Flowering Cherries, and Magnolias. At ground level, let it mingle with compatible Spirits like Daffodils, Bleeding Hearts, and Trilliums.

How to Grow

Got shade? That’s where Dark Vader Lungwort likes to be. Plant it in a spot where it will be sheltered from the hot sun. Water regularly. This is a tough Spirit that can survive dry periods, but the foliage will be much lusher and more vibrant with constant moisture. Not too much, though—soggy soil will cause trouble. Some Lungworts are affected by powdery mildew, a cosmetic disease that leaves a white film on the leaves. Dark Vader was selected in part for its superior resistance to powdery mildew. This plant is semi-evergreen where winters aren’t too severe.
