Japanese Kousa Dogwood is a showstopper in late spring, when its branches - arranged in broad wedding cake tiers - are frosted thickly with brilliant white flowers. The branches literally sag under the weight of all those flowers! Kousa Dogwood is a lovely mid-sized specimen tree to plant in celebration of a wedding anniversary. Every year the "wedding cake" display will become grander and more beautiful. This Dogwood's compact size makes it easy to fit in anywhere in your landscape - even under most power lines. This choice specimen tree adds value to a home wherever it is planted and will give many years of pleasure to whoever is lucky enough to own one.

The Story

As you may remember from History Class, Japan was once a closed society.  Catholic missionaries there in the 1500s had converted so many to Christianity that the authorities felt threatened, and for over 200 years, scarcely anyone was allowed to enter (or leave) the country.  When the U.S. finally demanded trading rights in the 1850s, the horticultural floodgates burst, and boatloads of exotic new plants—like this Dogwood—poured into the West.  Our Clump-Form “Kousas” develop multiple trunks, as they are apt to have in the wilds of Japan.

The Details

This is one outstanding Dogwood! Creamy white flowers just seem to hover above bright green leaves. Absolutely covered with flowers in mid-summer, Japanese Dogwoods bloom later than others. Exfoliating bark, which becomes more defined with age, is just one other tantalizing characteristic. Japanese Dogwoods also produce edible strawberry-like fruit and have beautiful reddish-purple fall color. Winner of the Cary Award from the Worcester County Horticultural Society and chosen for its outstanding performance, hardiness and eye-appeal.

How to Grow

Kousa Dogwood is an uncommon tree, which is surprising, given how easy it is to please and how much it has to offer.  This naturally disease-resistant tree enjoys a site in full sun or part shade and wants regular irrigation but no “wet feet.”  It has a preference for acid soils, so if rhododendrons and azaleas grow well in your area, this is definitely the tree for you (though it’s adaptable to other situations, too).  As your tree grows, you’ll probably want to remove the lowermost branches to show off that amazing jigsaw-puzzle bark!  Pruning is best done shortly after the flowers are spent.
