With their dense, dark foliage, some evergreens have a rather somber effect in the landscape. Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel, on the other hand, is cheery and bright. The lustrous green leaves are held upright, giving the plant a perky appearance, and the plumy white spring flowers are particularly profuse on this selection. Otto Luyken gives you all the advantages that evergreens provide to a landscape as well, like year-round structure, winter color, and a sense of permanence and longevity. Use it within your foundation beds, entryway garden, or patio plantings for a pert, polished look all year long.
Cherry Laurel, also known as Common Laurel or English Laurel, is indeed related to Cherry Trees (though you can’t eat the fruit it produces). This large Accent is native to eastern Europe and parts of the Middle East, ranging from Albania to Iran. Gardeners have valued it for hundreds of years as a useful hedge, evergreen filler, or even a small tree. Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel has undergone a surge of popularity in the U.S. recently, although it has been around since the 1950s. Otto Luyken’s namesake was the director of a tree nursery in Weener, Germany, in the first half of the twentieth century.
Mid- to late spring brings an eruption of creamy white bottlebrush flowers. Otto Luyken CherryLaurel’s tiny blooms have a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators of all stripes.
How to Grow
Adaptable and easy. Otto Luyken Cherry Laurel flourishes in sun or shade, although it does prefer shade in hot climates. It isn’t terribly fussy about soil as long as it drains well, and it isn’t a water hog; in fact, it puts up with dry shade like a champ. A tolerance for pollution and salt spray makes it a worthy choice for urban gardens, and its resistance to deer browse means it’s a godsend in certain rural areas. Cherry Laurels are not heavy feeders. Fertilize Otto Luyken with a gentle organic product like Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer if the plant needs a boost.
