Pink perfection! If precious pink flowers make you weak in the knees, then this is a must-have Accent for your landscape. Holden Rhododendron greets the merry days of mid-spring with a cavalcade of magnificent rosy pink blossoms. The blooms start out a rich red-pink upon first opening, eventually fading to a lovely sugar-pink. Glossy, dark evergreen leaves complete the picture. Holden Rhododendron is a compact plant that works wonderfully in foundation beds, entryway gardens, patio areas, and courtyards. You’ll appreciate its lush year-round greenery, and each spring you’ll look forward to its pretty parade of perky pink blooms.

Hybrid Evergreen Rhododendrons are the result of years of patient breeding work done using countless species and forms of these spectacular Accents. Holden Rhododendron originated at the nursery of Tony Shammarello near Cleveland, Ohio. Shammarello took a sudden interest in breeding Rhododendrons after the record-breakingly cold winter of 1938, which left 90% of the Rhodies in his fields crispy and brown. He set out to develop new plants that were more hardy and also less leggy than those on the market at the time. He named Holden Rhododendron after the Holden family near Cleveland, who founded the Holden Arboretum. It was introduced in 1958.
Most evergreen Rhododendrons are simply a treat for the eyes, but Holden Rhododendron also offers up a light fragrance from its beautiful blooms. Plant Holden near a seating area or path so the gentle perfume will not be missed.
How to Grow
Rhododendrons appreciate a little pampering. They thrive when shielded from hot summer sun(though Holden is more heat tolerant than most) and given moist but well-drained, acidic soil. They never like to dry out but don’t care for soggy conditions, either. Rhododendrons can “burn” from harsh chemical fertilizers, so feed with a gentle organic product like Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer. Azalea lace bug can sometimes be an issue, but specimens grown in optimal conditions in most cases will remain healthy and resistant to attack. If pruning is necessary, trim your Holden Rhododendron immediately after blooming, as next year’s flower buds are formed in summer.
